PUEBLO — It was tough sledding in the opening round for the two Frederick High School wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament.

But that didn’t deter FHS’ Alex Carrillo. After a quarterfinal round loss, Carrillo sailed through the consolation bracket with two wins in three matches and finished fourth at 113 pounds.

Izaiah Padilla of Pueblo County took third place with a 9-2 decision over Carrillo. Earlier in the tourney, Nathan Nodalsky of Thompson Valley earned a 4-2 decision over Carrillo. After that, Carrillo went to work and earned a 9-1 decision over Durango’s Jacobn Fenberg in the opening consolation match.

In the consolation semifinals, Carrillo needed 41 seconds to pin Palisade’s Mikey Salazar.

Frederick’s other state qualifier, JT Gardner, lost both his matches and did not place at 132 pounds.

Weston Dalton pinned JT Gardner in 1:51 of their quarterfinal round of the 132-pound bracket.  Riverdale Ridge’s Drake Kiefer beat Gardner 4-2  in the first round of consolation matches.
