I know we’re only through Week 6 of the high school football season, but so far there has been a switch in power and the Arvada area has been draining the competition.
The records don’t lie and speak a lot louder than words. Arvada West and Pomona are both undefeated at 6-0 and on top of the Class 5A Jeffco League. Ralston Valley is also undefeated at 6-0 and at the summit of the Class 4A Mountain Plains League.
Sure, it’s still early, but A-West, Pomona and Ralston Valley have been taking it to the competition.
In 5A Jeffco, Columbine and Chatfield have combined to win the last 5A state titles, but the revitalized program at Pomona has already knocked off both the Rebels and Chargers.
The Panthers beat Columbine at their own game in Week 5, bruising their way to a 17-3 victory with a solid running game and relentless defense. First-year coach Jay Madden feared a letdown against Chatfield last week, but a 38-0 victory against the Chargers signaled that Pomona is on a mission this season.
A-West might not be getting the attention that Pomona has, but the Wildcats are proving that their run to the 5A state semifinals last year wasn’t a fluke under first-year coach Casey Coons.
After sneaking out a 7-3 overtime victory against Standley Lake in the Wildcats’ league opener, they downed Dakota Ridge 42-21 in Week 5. The loss to A-West created a downward spiral for Dakota Ridge. A-West followed up the drubbing of Dakota Ridge with a 14-point victory over Bear Creek.
Ralston Valley is looking like it could compete with its 5A brothers. The Mustangs have shut out four of their five league opponents and are clearly in the driver’s seat going into the final stretch of the regular season if they get past Green Mountain (4-2 overall, 4-0 in league) this Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.
There is a lot of football yet to be played, but three undefeated football teams out of Arvada have created a buzz.
