Top 50 postponed
The Colorado Rockies Top 50 Senior baseball game Sunday, June 14, was postponed because of thunderstorms. The Rockies-Mariners game was completed, despite a 55-minute rain delay which included Coors Field in Denver being under a tornado warning for 35 minutes, but the high school game was postponed after a second storm was bearing down on Coors Field.
The Rockies said they hoped to reschedule the game, but no date has been announced. Faith Christian’s Pierce Johnson, Wheat Ridge’s Jacob Nelson, D’Evelyn’s Anthony Sylvester and Lakewood’s Connor Eppard were selected to play in the annual all-star game.
Pitchers drafted
Two Arvada-area baseball players were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft last week.
Ralston Valley High School graduate Casey Schmidt was taken by the New York Mets in the 15th round with the 464th pick. The 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher had a 6-1 record with a 3.12 ERA his freshman season at Creighton University. Schmidt missed the 2008 season following offseason surgery and sat out the 2009 after transferring to the University of San Diego.
Recent Faith Christian Academy graduate Pierce Johnson was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 15th round with the 469th pick. The right-handed pitcher missed half of his senior season with the Eagles last spring with a broken knuckle on his pitching hand. Johnson has signed to play college ball at Missouri State University if he doesn’t sign a professional contract with the Rays.
