I grew up in the Denver metro area and moved back in 2016. My wife and I live in the Cory Merrill neighborhood with our three young daughters — ages 4 and twin 2-year-olds — and our dog.

I have spent the past six years working as a prosecutor here in Denver. I have seen first-hand the consequences of policy failures made at the local level because many of the people who ended up in a courtroom with me were suffering from addiction, mental health issues, financial insecurity and housing instability. These root causes of much of criminal behavior need to be proactively addressed well before the crime ever takes place.

My focus on city council would be on reducing crime and boosting available housing in Denver. Reducing crime in our city means both providing law enforcement with the resources and tools necessary to target violent offenders and career criminals, while also creatively addressing the root causes of so much of criminal behavior.

We have seen in Denver that when we have provided stable housing and wrap-around services to some of our chronically homeless neighbors, it has the additional benefit of reducing arrests among this population. It’s a good example, showing that when we can stabilize someone with housing and treatment, it will also reduce that person’s involvement in the criminal justice system.

As we continue to grow as a city, we must boost the overall stock of housing available. This means zoning reform and incentivizing infill and development spread across all 78 neighborhoods. This can be done while also ensuring that the unique history and vibrancy of our distinct neighborhoods are maintained and protected. Where I live in Cory Merrill, we have predominantly single-family homes with a mixed-use (retail and residential) development in the heart of the neighborhood. This type of balance shows that promoting development can fit within the vibrancy and unique character of our neighborhoods.

I would make sure to be out in each of our neighborhoods listening to the concerns of my community. Meeting Denverites where they are and during times that work with their busy schedules has been a priority of this campaign, and would be the model for how I would serve on Denver City Council. I want an ongoing dialogue taking place with Denverites so that I am aware of the specific issues people are facing and ensuring that the people who I represent understand my priorities and goals.

We have challenges facing Denver right now, but we also have so many incredible opportunities. I am so excited to work with the rest of the community to build a Denver that is safe, vibrant and open for everyone who wants to call this place home.
