Jefferson CountyInternational Women’s Day
Editor:
Women struggle for equality in a collective effort to secure basic human rights for themselves and for all. As we learned from Dr. Martin Luther King, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
A gender-balanced world means equal opportunity and fairness for women. It also means a better world for all. Liberating the oppressed also liberates the oppressor. Fair and equal treatment for women will end the moral corrosion that results inevitably from injustice.
A gender-balanced world also means fully exercising the capabilities of every individual, driving prosperity, discovery and social progress.
The first International Women’s Day in 1911 attracted more than a million participants. More than 100 years later, though much progress has been made, for women the struggle continues. The women of Jefferson County continue our work for equality with the fourth annual Women’s Day event March 8 at Baldoria on the Water in Lakewood.
Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera will be the keynote speaker for a day-long program featuring several other exciting speakers. The luncheon includes awards recognizing an Unsung Heroine and a woman who Shattered Glass to achieve her goals.
Funds raised will benefit Porchlight, the Jefferson and Gilpin County Family Justice Center.
The event is sponsored by the City of Golden, SCL Health Lutheran Hospital and IX Power Clean Water. Tickets and more information are available at www.ixpowerfoundation.org/women-s-day/. I urge your readers to participate in this event and to get involved with the gender balance movement.

Thanks for the pedestrian light
Editor:
Thank you, CDOT.
After years of petitioning, several “traffic studies”, numerous collisions and near collisions, and countless near death experiences by pedestrians, CDOT finally installed the new HAWK light.
This light enables residents to cross CO 74 with a greater degree of safety. Now if we could get law enforcement to enforce the speed and ticket scofflaws of the new red light, it’ll make for a much safer crossing for walkers, hikers and cyclists alike.
While it may be a minor (about 30 seconds) inconvenience for some drivers, the consequences of not adding this light for pedestrians were inevitable. Thank you, CDOT!!

The GOP’s secret weapon
Editor:
Sen. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the Republicans’ secret weapon in 2020. This analysis is set forth by Kimberley Strassel in her Feb. 8 Wall Street Journal piece.
AOC’s Green New Deal to be rolled out and accomplished in 10 years is incredible. She also said the Earth was doomed due to global warming or climate change in 12 years if we don’t make immediate adjustments. Today’s news on a radio show, in examining the proposal, says that if we did all the extreme measures she recommends, that the Earth’s temperature would be reduced by one fourth of one degree in 100 years according to NASA — that is if all the world did it with us. She is making Bernie Sanders, a declared socialist, look like a piker.
Elizabeth Warren isn’t helping. Her application for the bar in Texas has a place for declaring race. She wrote: American Indian. She has since apologized. Probably many Americans have as much Indian blood as she.
Sen. Cory Booker, another declared contender for the presidency in 2020, has just made known that he is a vegan and that he is the only vegan running for president. Probably the electorate doesn’t care as much about what a candidate eats as what and how he thinks.
Nancy Pelosi in the House and Chuck Schumer in the Senate certainly have their hands full reining in these diverse members of their party. All of this seems so extreme to the people in fly-over country that the GOP doesn’t need to lift a finger (to quote Strassel) for this all to work towards Trump’s re-election in 2020.
