Following in big brother’s footsteps
My big brother Cassidy and I grew up in Santa Fe. He’s a rock climber and he moved to Colorado first. We’re really close, and I missed him for the seven or eight years he was here before me. So, I decided I wanted to live closer, and I followed him out here.
I have lived in Golden for a little over eight years now. Cassidy still lives in the area, too, and recently opened a brewery in Lakewood called Green Mountain Beer Company.
We still meet up every Tuesday.
A hot spot in town
I opened Virtuosity Dance Centre in August 2013. We offer children’s classes for ages two-and-a-half to 17, and adult classes for dance and fitness.
The majority of our students are local Golden families, but we’re starting to get students from other nearby communities. We have eight teachers and each has their own specialty. It’s a very diverse group.
We had our Annual Spring Concert of Dance on May 11 and 12. I’m very proud of all of students and how incredible they were.
A big part of wanting to open Virtuosity was to become more involved in the community.
I bartend at Woody’s as well, and I’ve been there for about six-and-a-half years. It’s such a cool place to work. It’s a hot spot in our town and I feel like I get to meet everybody.
Connecting our human experiences
I’ve known my whole life that I wanted to dance. I requested to take dance classes when I was three. I started student teaching when I was 15 and started choreographing and teaching as a profession when I was 19.
I love jazz — I love the energy about it. It is the form of dance I’ve studied the most and the primary form that I teach.
To me, dance is a way to connect our human experiences to each other. When we’re on stage, we are telling story that everyone can relate to. And it’s universal because it’s told through movement, without words.
