The Legislative Council for the Colorado High School Activities Association in late January tweaked the RPI formula for qualifications for the state baseball playoffs.

The new formula that will be used in determining the RPI is 35 percent from a team’s winning percentage, 35 percent of its opponents’ winning percentage and 30 percent from its opponents’ opponents winning percentage. Previously, the percentages were split 25 percent, 50 percent and 25 percent.

“I think it puts you in a better place to control some of your own destiny. The more weight that they put on your personal performance is going to help us,” Clear Creek baseball coach Stan Gould said.

That previous RPI rating was also used last year during the football season, costing a 7-2 Clear Creek team from making the 16-team 1A state playoffs.

“In football, it killed us this year. We had a great season and then we didn’t make it into the playoffs,” said Gould, who serves as defensive coordinator for the CCHS football squad.

This fall, football will bring down its RPI percentage as follows: 37.5, 37.5 and 25 percent.
