I am a recent convert (resident) to Colorado, the Roxborough area to exact. I converted from the soggy green East coast, Virginia Beach to approximate. Without sounding too dramatic, the main reason for leaving the Atlantic Ocean’s tourist center was to jump track, do something wild and new. My wife, three kids and myself, driving across the country to a place we’d never been for opportunities untapped.

This blog is my way of meshing into this new environment, writing tends to help me get my mind off being a grad school junkie, trying to find a job with virtually no experience other than swinging a chainsaw or sniffing pipe cleaner.

What got me thinking about writing about my new conversion to Colorado was an experience back home in Virginia before we moved here. We met someone from Arvada and we were asking questions about the area and she made the comment that she did not like being in Colorado much. She gave me the impression that she just preferred the traffic, southern hospitality balled up in southern sassiness and flat green landscapes over what she had grown up with in Arvada.

As we pulled into our new digs, I remember wondering ‘how could anyone not love this place’. Our home faces the metro area and I could see from where we are in Roxborough to the city skyline. I know it is easy to take things for granted, especially when things become routinized. This was to some degree why we left Virginia.

So, as a new convert to the Colorado way of life I give a proverbial thumbs up to everyone I see. Even the grumpiest of Walmart workers or distracted drivers seem to be a bit more jolly than what I remember of the East coast. I salute this way of life, the sublime landscape, the many mega churches with huge crosses and modern architecture, how everything still runs even when it snows, places to buy beer the size of Bass Pro Shop and most of all how I might just be suffering from altitude sickness.

Sleepy Kafka will be my moniker: East Coast wanna be writer who wishes he was J.D. Salinger or Flannery O’Connor, writing terrible prose about what it’s like to adjust in Littleton, Colorado, Roxborough to be exact. Sleepy Kafka with a penchant for the sublime, philosophical, theological and creative nonsense.
