PANTHERS HOST TOURNAMENT
Woodland Park High School will host the Mountain Madness basketball tournament this weekend.
The tournament features boys and girls games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The boys will host Florence, Palmer Ridge and Centauri, respectively, while the Panthers girls will take on Vista Ridge, Lewis-Palmer and Florence.
TAPIA SHINES IN SEASON OPENER
Cripple Creek-Victor junior Katie Tapia scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Pioneers season-opening 58-39 victory over Mountain Valley/Moffat on Nov. 30. Tapia converted 12 of 27 field goal attempts and connected on 8 of 15 free throws.
THUNDERWOLVES LOSE IN QUARTERFINALS
The No. 1-ranked Colorado State University-Pueblo football team had its season come to an end on Dec. 1 with a 34-13 loss to West Texas A&M in the Division II quarterfinals in Pueblo.
Woodland Park alum Alex Fenlon (class of 2011) is a redshirt freshman running back. He played in two games this season, but had no rushing stats.
Louie Neil (2012) redshirted for the Thunderwolves this season. He is expected to be a defensive back in 2013.
PANTHERS ON THE MOVE
Several Woodland Park athletes are playing sports for other area schools because their sports are not offered at the high school.
Swimming for Manitou Springs are sisters Kelsey and Caitlin Seibel, and Sheridan Decker.
Four hockey players are spread out among three schools; Tyler Elwell (Palmer), Jeremy Hamerquist (Cheyenne Mountain) and Jake Neil and Cody Johnson (Coronado).
OLYMPIC CHAMP FRANKLIN TO SWIM FOR REGIS
Missy Franklin, the four-time gold medalist at last summer’s London Games, and high school senior, confirmed last week that she will compete for Regis Jesuit at selected dual meets this season.
This season’s CHSAA swimming and diving championships will be held Feb. 8-9 at Edora Pool and Ice Center in Fort Collins. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The event was sold out weeks in advance last season when Franklin won several events, and many parents and fans were unable to watch the event live.
