Everything was in order for the annual Thanksgiving basket give-away last weekend, according to Sue Hubert at the Fort Lupton Food and Clothing Bank, with the Methodist Church passing out 400 Turkey dinner boxes Nov. 17 at Gray Oil.
“The whole town supports this project, the businesses and churches and individuals donate towards the boxes,” Hubert explained. “We coordinate with the Epworth Methodist Church in Denver for this… It is a great experience to be able to help that many people have a good Thanksgiving.”
In addition to the Thanksgiving push, the food bank is preparing for Christmas.
“The food bank is doing 200 Christmas boxes on Dec. 20,” Hubert said. “Many people need food. More first-timers every day.”
Taking an another bite out of holiday hunger, the Wilder family, in cooperation with Fort Lupton Freemasons and Forlurado, are planning their own Thanksgiving Day Dinner basket give-away. The baskets will be distributed to local area needy families and include all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner. The Wilders’ began distributing baskets several years ago and continue to fund and participate in the project to this day.
“This is a way the Wilder family can express our gratitude in being a part of this great community,” Jeffrey Wilder said. “Things were not always so good for my family, and I feel honored and blessed to have the ability to do this”. Each year the give way has grown. The Wilders started out with only a few baskets and this year they are expecting to deliver over 150 baskets.
The Freemasons, along with a generous donation, will accommodate the Wilder family by allowing the use of the Masonic Temple, 130 Denver Ave., as a command center for the basket preparation and local distribution point. Forlurado will participate in the give-away by volunteering members’ time in assembling and distributing gift baskets.
Community participation is encouraged, if you know of a needy family or if you would like to donate or participate, contact Jen Wilder, project coordinator, via email at jwildermay@gmail.com.
