Summers’ immunity bill signed into law

On May 29 Gov. Hickenlooper signed into law Senate Bill 20, which was sponsored by Rep. Ken Summers, R-Lakewood, which creates immunity for people who report a drug or alcohol overdose to emergency services.

Those who report the overdose must do so in good faith, and cooperate with law enforcement and emergency responders.

The bill also provides immunity for those suffering from the overdose.

According to a press release from Colorado House Republicans, fear of police involvement is the top reason that people don’t call emergency services after seeing an overdose. It also noted that in 2010 Colorado was third in the nation for deaths from overdoses.
