COMMERCE CITY — The girls soccer team of Adams City High School put together a very respectable season, making the first round of the Class 5A state tournament.
Part of the team unity might have something to do with the three pairs of sisters on the squad: Sophia and Bianca Deaguero, Larissa and Vanessa DeLaRosa and twins Melissa and Monique Lara.
“To have three sets of sister, not only a part of the team but all on varsity, was quite amazing,” coach Elizabeth Westcott said. “I felt it reflected our team. We always tell the girls that we are not only a team, but we are a family. Have so many sisters on the team helped hit that fact home even more.”
The Deaguero sisters shared captain status, along with a lot of common interests, which helped bringing the team bond closer.
“We are sisters,” Sophia said of her sister Bianca and how they helped the team flow. “We live together, see each other every day, and we have classes together. But on the soccer field, I feel as if my sister and I have a stronger connection, which in a way helped our team establish a family connection.”
Not only does the sibling connection help, but Sophia said they actually do bring a lot to the table outside of their connection.
“One trait we both have is passion,” Sophia said. “This works as strength for our team because we all have passion for the game. And with that, we all played with a little more of an edge on the field.”
Bianca also chipped in, talking about how special it was to play with her older sister and share the experience.
“Playing on the same team as my sister was such a great experience,” the soon-to-be senior said. “I learn so much from her in just one game or one practice that contributes to me becoming a better soccer player. I learned that no matter how good a player is, it all depends on the chemistry between the players on the team. It’s important to start as a family and finish as a family.”
Sophia has some pending college soccer scholarships but has yet to choose which college she will attend this fall.
Adams City finished the season with an 8-7-0 record and seven wins in league play. Most of this year’s players will return for next season, retaining much of the family bonds that were established this past season.
