Defining ‘dying with dignity’
Editor:
Jerry Fabyanic’s article on “Staying healthy until the end” has some good points and one profoundly misguided one.
First the good. Yes, we do have a responsibility to take care of ourselves. Our health resources are limited, and we must realize what we might squander regarding our health can come at the expense of our neighbor’s health needs.
All the other aspects of the article have to do with your utility as a person as seen by others — or your usefulness, according to the relative values of the moment. The phrase “dying with dignity” is redefined and coupled with your utility and detached from authentic human dignity. Dying with dignity can only happen from the inside out, like all other stages of life.

Republicans in Congress
not practicing party line
Editor:
If the Republicans think they are hurting only the little people (middle- and lower-income groups) by refusing to raise the debt ceiling, then they don’t know very much about finance. The more money you have to invest, the more you will be hurt by a credit crisis.
And I am tired of having President Barack Obama blamed for the huge deficit. You can’t wage wars without raising the deficit, and we know who has been waging the wars.
Keep in mind: When I say Republicans, I am referring to the ones who run the country, the ones with lots of money. My friends and neighbors who vote Republican are true conservatives who practice the party line for everyone, not just for the rich.
