The trial for Hanif Sims, scheduled to begin on May 31, has been delayed.
According to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Judge G. David Miller has granted a continuance requested by Sims’ defense counsel much to the objection of the prosecution.
On May 10 a first degree murder charge in the death of 9-year-old Genesis Sims was added to the charges against Sims. Initially Sims’ girlfriend Monique Lynch was charged with first degree murder in the death of his daughter, however after Lynch cut a plea deal and agreed to testify against Sims, testimony was heard in the new evidence and Miller found there was enough evidence to add the charge.
At the May 10 hearing Sims’ defense attorney said he would be ready to proceed with the May 31 trial date but Miller had some concerns that defense needed more time in order to represent his client (Sims) well.
The new trial date for Sims is scheduled for Oct. 13. A motion hearing will take place on July 13. Lynch, meanhwile, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 30.
