More information on I-70
Editor:
I’ve been involved with the Interstate 70 issue for almost a dozen years now and have actively pursued a strategy that would allow a transit solution to be built out on an “incrementally beneficial” basis, starting with the problem areas first. Addressing the problem areas first is exactly what the I-70 Coalition and many others have recommended.
I’ve also been very concerned about what a full-blown road-widening project would mean for the citizens of Idaho Springs and Clear Creek County, or any “improvements” that would require drastic alterations to the existing footprint of the highway.
As such, I’ve advocated on behalf of an elevated, single-direction guideway for buses that could be built mostly within the existing median in a manner that was sensitive to the valid concerns of those who live in the area.
Obviously, the major benefit of a bus guideway is that it can be built piece by piece as money becomes available and need arises, whereas an AGS system cannot. An AGS system needs to be 100 percent complete before it becomes functional. This requires borrowing billions of dollars and going deep into debt. Is that what anybody wants these days?
This Saturday morning, March 19, from 8 to 10 a.m., I will be on KYGT radio station to discuss the I-70 issue with Greg Markle. I hope everybody has a chance to tune in to Greg’s show because I’ll be sharing a ton of new information and perspective that you haven’t heard from all those local politicians wanting an umpteen-billion-dollar high-speed rail/monorail system. Please call in to the radio show with any questions and/or concerns you might have about the I-70 issue.
Also, you might want to consider taping the show for future reference, since so much new information will be shared.
You should know, in advance, that former Clear Creek County commissioner Harry Dale was asked to participate in a debate with me on the show but declined the offer.
We’ll see if he’s one of those who calls in.
