Martha DeJesus
I have written a number of times about Positive Behavior
Support, and we have spent lots of time on our discipline system to
make it consistent throughout our building and aligned with the
junior high/high school. In the next few days we will send a letter
home explaining our “Step Up” program, which will go into effect in
March. Please read the letter carefully when you receive it, and
sign the attached sheet. We are asking that you return the sheet to
the school (your child can give it to his/her teacher) so that we
have evidence that you understand they system. Each child who
returns a signed sheet will receive a pencil. Several students and
parents already know about the program and it has worked very well.
Be sure to call your child’s teacher if you have questions.
Another aspect of Positive Behavior Support is recognizing good
behavior and academic performance for all students. Several of our
teachers are using tickets in their classrooms to recognize
students’ successes, and the tickets go into a container for weekly
and monthly drawings for prizes. The prizes are small, such as a
small toy, a pencil, or a coupon for a free page of homework.
Students enjoy being recognized for doing the right thing. Often,
students who always make good choices and have excellent behavior
feel taken for granted when they aren’t noticed. At the same time,
students who sometimes have problems with their behavior don’t
often get recognized for doing the right thing. Discipline is a
response to bad behavior, but it doesn’t always change behavior.
Positive recognition changes behavior. As a staff we are working on
a number of ways to recognize positive behavior and achievement and
make it a part of our regular routine.
