City to purchase open-space parcel near Highway 6/Heritage Road intersection

Golden City Council approved spending $640,000 to purchase about 8 acres along the north side of the Eagle Ridge Hogback, located just northeast of the intersection of Highway 6 and Heritage Road, from Rick Lunnon.

Discussions between the city and Lunnon started in 1997, but no agreement could be reached on the price.

The city will pay less than a third of what the property was appraised for in 2005.

The property has been on Golden’s priority list for open-space preservation for many years because, as part of the Dakota Hogback, it is a unique geologic feature and functions as part of the foreground of the city’s mountain backdrop.

Lunnon will retain two easements across the property that could provide access for future grading, a wastewater mainline, and a bike path related to 6.2 acres at the southwest corner of Highway 6 and Heritage Road, that Lunnon may develop. The closing for the eight acres is scheduled for March 11.

Golden Elks raise funds for national foundation

During the annual PER Fun Nite, hosted by the past presidents of the Golden Elks, $506 was raised from a blind auction for the Elks National Foundation.

The foundation gave out more than $19 million in 2010, with support going for scholarships, drug awareness programs and the Elks’ Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot and veterans’ programs.

The theme for the evening was Mardi Gras, and guests came in costume. Visitors from the Elks lodges in Arvada, Denver and Idaho Springs attended.

Local woman wins $250,000 in lottery

For six years, Terrie Parker, of Golden, has entered her non-winning scratch tickets into the Colorado Lottery’s second-chance drawings. On Feb. 23, her persistence paid off, according to a press release from the lottery office.

Lottery officials surprised Parker at her home with the news that she’d won the $250,000 second-chance drawing prize for the $10 Scratch game, $250,000 Crossword Multiplier.

Parker registered her non-winning tickets online, and estimates that she has registered hundreds of tickets into the Crossword Multiplier drawing.

Her winning ticket was chosen from more than 178,888 entries.

“I never win anything,” Parker said. “I used to tell my daughter I would give her 10 percent of the winnings to get her to turn them in for me. Now I just register them online.”

Parker said she has no plans to retire from her job, but will use the funds to pay off her home equity loan and get new flooring.

The Colorado Lottery currently holds second-chance drawings for 16 Scratch games. Check out the current list of games that qualify for drawings or enter non-winning tickets for the second-chance drawings online at www.coloradolottery.com.
