Fire Department warns people about thin ice

Golden firefighters are asking people to be extra cautious about going onto the ice of lakes, rivers and creeks or allowing their pets to do so.

A black Labrador retriever ran from her owner Feb. 13 at Lions Park onto the frozen river and dove into a hole in the ice, where she became trapped. The owner called 911, but rescuers were not able to save the dog.

Firefighters said warm weather is melting some of the ice, creating dangerous patches. In some places, they said, the ice is still thick enough to support weight, but a few inches away, a person or pet will break through.
