Fundraiser for Second Creek student April 18

Second Creek Elementary School is holding a fundraiser for student, Drew Copeland, 10, who underwent a heart transplant Dec. 22 in order to save his life. Drew was born with a heart defect and the heart he was born with was not healthy enough to help him grow and thrive. The fundraiser will help pay medical costs for Drew’s procedure, as the out-of-pocket cost for a heart transplant is more than $50,000.

The event will be from 2 to 6 p.m., April 18, at Smokin’ Joe’s restaurant at the Ramada Inn, 4700 Kipling St. in Wheat Ridge. Donations are needed of any items or gift certificates for services from local businesses to include in a raffle fundraiser. All proceeds will go to the Children’s Organ and Tissue Association to repay medical costs associated with Drew’s heart transplant.

COTA was founded in 1986 to help families pay transplant-related expenses. The organization exists to assist patients who require a life-saving organ, bone marrow, core blood or stem cell transplants. COTA works with all transplant patients age 21 and under for any disease complication, and with any patient who needs a transplant due to a genetic disease. COTA has assisted more than 1,400 families from almost every state and every economic situation to meet transplant-related expenses such as things not covered by insurance.

All donations are tax-deductible. If your business is willing to make a donation of some kind to the school’s fundraiser, contact one of the following individuals: Diana Ayala, 303-429-8992, di-ayala@hotmail.com; Jill Cabrera, 720-628-7206, linxjewels@live.com; Monica Kime, 303-287-1451, mkime.avon@yahoo.com. All business sponsors will have their name recognized at the school fundraiser. A sign will be made by the school children, which will be hung up on the afternoon of the event

Help PVHS AVID students

The AVID program has scheduled its 2nd Colorado College Road Trip for April 7-11. During this trip, 10-12 junior and senior students will visit five Colorado colleges and area attractions in search of the perfect college fit. The students have planned a variety of fundraising projects and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has agreed to double any donation made toward the trip through Donorschoose.org, if the trip gets fully funded. If donors will put up $1000, the foundation will cover the other half. Visit www.donorschoose.org/jvenegas to donate to the cause or call Jennifer Venegas, AVID program coordinator/teacher at PVHS, 303-655-8868.
