Dear Editor,
It is nice to see someone in our community step up and take a
stand for something he believes could make a tremendous impact on
our city and improve the value of life for many of us.
The importance of a YMCA in Woodland Park cannot be measured
simply by focusing on the 1% sales tax increase. I believe we have
to look at the ‘Whole Picture” and determine where our priorities
lie.
My husband and I have lived in Woodland Park for 15 years, have
two children under age 10, and we say “YES” to a Woodland Park
YMCA. We currently have a YMCA family membership in Colorado
Springs and enjoy all of the benefits for a fair monthly rate. And
believe it or not, it is less than four tickets, popcorn, ‘much too
large’ candy and sodas at the movies.
Also keep in mind that the YMCA offers income-based memberships,
financial assistance and daily rates to ensure all can utilize the
facility, regardless of your financial situation. We love living in
Woodland Park and enjoy all of the natural terrain and its beauty
each day.
The one thing we do not enjoy is driving down the Pass, wasting
at least an hour in the car, and spending the extra money on gas
just to find healthy indoor family activities. We then, of course,
will shop and eat in Colorado Springs for convenience’s sake.
For those of us committed to living and making Woodland Park “a
great place for families,” a YMCA in Woodland Park is, without
question, a step in the right direction.
What a wonderful way to create community and relationships
between families, seniors, teens, and youth in Woodland Park. I ask
that, as residents of Woodland Park, we open our hearts and look
deeper at what the value of a YMCA could bring to our community,
our families, and our children. I urge you to visit the YYES
website “Q&A” section at www.wpyyes.com. I agree with Neil Levy
and believe we all should, at the very least, have a vote on this
important decision.
Sincerely,
Nancy Lecky
