Coach: Corey McNellis
High school: Ponderosa
Sport: wrestling
What made you decide you wanted to become a coach in your
present sport?
I love the sport of wrestling and enjoy being around teenagers.
It was a great fit.
Describe one of the best moments you can remember from your
coaching career?
It is actually happening this year. We have a wrestler that
moved from another state that needs help off the mat. We are
watching a person grow into a man right in front of our eyes.
What was one of the most heartbreaking moments of your coaching
career?
Losing Daniel Kelly to graduation.
If a young athlete came to you and said he or she was interested
in a career as a coach, what advice would you give him/her?
Make sure you have plenty of money in savings, so that your
significant other is OK with the time commitment, and then have
fun.
What do you do for fun that isn’t related to the sport you
presently coach?
Raising my two boys. Teagan is 4, and Cayden is 2.
What is the toughest decision a coach in your sport has to make
on a fairly consistent basis?
When to be critical of a wrestler’s effort and when to be
positive.
If you could coach for any professional sports team for one
year, which would it be and what changes would you make?
The Colorado Rockies. I would bring back Roy Halladay to
Colorado.
Your present team just won the state championship. What do you
(and/or the team) do to celebrate the achievement?
Party at Brooklyn’s downtown. We take about two weeks to enjoy
it and then back to work.
