Air Force didn’t look like it was battling any letdown or
hangover following its road loss to Minnesota last week.
The Falcons, instead, bounced back with a huge 37-13 win Sept.
19 in Albuquerque, N.M., opening up their Mountain West schedule
with a win for the 10th straight year.
Air Force got out quick, as Anthony Wright Jr. blocked a Lobo
field goal attempt on the first New Mexico drive. Johnathon Warzeka
then ran it in from 9-yards out on the ensuing drive.
Two plays into the next Lobo drive Wright came up big again,
this time forcing a fumble that Air Force covered up at its own
38-yard line.
The result on the ensuing drive this time was a 24-yard Eric
Soderberg field goal and a 10-0 lead. However, the most crucial
occurrence of the Falcons’ possession was the loss of quarterback
Tim Jefferson, who went down with a sprained ankle and did not
return.
The Falcons did not seem to miss the 2008 MWC freshman of the
year too much in this one, though, and it only took three plays
into the next New Mexico posession before Air Force had caused yet
another turnover, as Jon Davis ran back a 38-yard interception for
a touchdown.
Davis came up with another interception came two posessions
later, this time setting up a Savier Stevens 6-yard touchdown run,
and, in turn, giving the Falcons a 24-0 lead just before the
half.
James Wright responded for New Mexico with a 43-yard touchdown
run, cutting the lead to 24-6 at the half as the Lobos failed on a
2-point try. Wright fininshed the scoring out later in the fourth
with an 84-yard run, but was held to -1 yard rushing on his other
three carries.
The Falcons second half scoring was provided by a pair of
Soderberg field goals as well as a 28-yard touchdown pass from
backup quarterback Connor Dietz to Kevin Fogler.
Dietz ran the ball five times for 23 yards and was 2-for-4
passing for 40 yards, while Asher Clark led the ground attack once
again with 86 yards for the Falcons and Jared Tew added 61, but the
story in this one was all defense and special teams.
Reggie Rembert had three big returns for the Falcons in his
first game back from a two-game suspension, returning a punt for 30
yards, and a pair of kickoffs for 60 and 36 yards respectively.
The Falcons (2-1, 1-0 MWC) now return home to play San Diego
State (1-2, 0-0) Sept. 26 at noon.
