To the class of 2009 Alternative School:

The parents of the Alternative School would like to congratulate the class of 2009 for all the hard work put forth to graduate. Even when they gave you more assignments the last week of school, you all made it. You showed them that anything is possible. Good job. Once again, congratulations to the class of 2009 Alternative School.

Let freedom ring

Editor:

Georgetown is reviving an old tradition of bell ringing at noon on the Fourth of July and at midnight on New Year’s Eve. During the 1930s and ‘40s, children, with adult supervision, eagerly rang the many bells for these special occasions.

Prior to modern fire siren alarms installed in the early years of World War II, and later replaced with radio communications, Georgetown’s only method of calling volunteer firefighters to an emergency was by ringing one or more of the three firehouse bells. In addition to the fire bells, there are also three functional church bells and the original 1874 schoolhouse bell — making a total of seven bells in an area only five blocks long and two blocks wide.

Georgetown is likely the only town in Colorado with that many working bells concentrated in such a small area, and all in the center of the historic part of our town.

So, at noon on July Fourth, listen for the sound of freedom’s ring.
