American Legion Post 1980 has selected Woodland Park High School
junior Timothy Woods, son of Beth and Jonathan Woods of Woodland
Park, to represent his school at the American Legion Colorado Boys
State program, which will be June 7-13 on the CSU-Pueblo
campus.
This citizenship program allows young men from all across
Colorado to earn college credits while they learn-by-doing as they
create a complete state with cities, counties, and state
governments. American Legion Boys State is a hands-on approach to
the study of state government, focusing on individual participation
and personal experience in a model state, complete with
governmental bodies and elected public officials. It mirrors a
typical state government in structure.
David Turley, Post 1980’s Boys State chairman, indicated that
Woods will be an outstanding representative for the American
Legion, his high school and his community. Woods is a leader in
forensics at Woodland Park High School and will a captain of the
forensics team next year.
“The experience I will gain at Boys State is going to be highly
beneficial to my life in the future,” Woods stated in his
application.
In addition to Post 1980’s payment of the Boys State enrollment
fee, upon completion of the Boys State program, his senior year at
Woodland Park, and his enrollment at an institution of high
education, Woods will also receive a $250 scholarship from the
local American Legion Post.
Treavor Arias, a senior, represented Post 1980, Woodland Park
High School, and his community at the Colorado Boys State in 2008.
Arias plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University,
Prescott, Ariz., in the fall .
