She began exhibiting her artwork in 2008 after a long period in
the business world, she says.

“I was a painter in my youth, through the ’80s, then married and
worked with my husband in his antiquarian bookstore, Book
World.”

The store has closed its brick and mortar venue and now operates
nationally on the Internet, like many rare book dealers.

And Josephine Benham has returned to her earlier need for
creativeness and self-expression.

An exhibit of her paintings will open with a reception from 4 to
6:30 p.m. May 9 at Town Hall Arts Center’s Stanton Gallery, 2450 W.
Main Street, downtown Littleton.

She has seven recent paintings and some completed earlier. “My
work is non-objective, cerebral,” she said and her artists’
statement expands on her thinking.

“As a human being, my choices shape my personality, define my
character and make up my life. I am what my choices are.

“I paint for self-expression, the urge, the organic need to
think and express my creativeness. What I choose to paint, and do
it well, is the essence of my joy in painting.

“Painting is an occupation for me, which fills my day, exercises
my brain and calms my soul. My spirits soar and I feel fulfilled…
Completed paintings reflect my choices and become the hearts and
soul of my work.”

Benham’s home and studio are in Denver, but in 2008 she
exhibited at Goodson Recreation Center and Koelbel Library in
Centennial and also at Elohim Gallery.

Gallery hours at Town Hall are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through
Fridays and during performances. For more information call
