Englewood’s Alternative Development and Academic Program
Training moves into a new home at Bishop Elementary School when
school resumes in August.

ADAPT, a program for special needs students, will move from its
long-time location at Maddox Elementary School because Maddox is
earmarked as the new home for the Early Childhood Education program
under Superintendent Sean McDaniel’s board-approved plan for major
changes in the district.

Linda McCaslin, Bishop principal, said she is thrilled and
excited to welcome the ADAPT program to the school.

She said she knows it will be valuable educational experience,
learning how to meet the needs of the students. Plans are to
arrange for ADAPT teachers to visit Bishop later this year to
conduct training with staff and students so they will be ready to
respond to the children with special needs and make them feel
welcome and at home at Bishop.

Bishop was chosen because of the wide halls and a building
layout that will be easy for wheelchair-bound students to travel,
the superintendent said.

“Parents and teachers of ADAPT students toured Bishop and they
seemed pleased with the location,” McDaniel said. “We will have to
do some work such as building ramps, enlarging some bathroom
facilities and widening some doors. However, our maintenance people
feel the cost will be minimal and the work can be done so the new
facilities are ready for the ADAPT students in August.”

Relocation of ADAPT was a major concern when McDaniel’s plan was
introduced. However, when the school board approved the plan, the
district established a committee that included parents of ADAPT
students, ADAPT teachers to evaluate possible sites for program at
the four remaining elementary schools, Bishop, Cherrelyn, Clayton
and Charles Hay.

Clayton was ruled out because it is a two-story building with no
elevator and the location of Cherrelyn wasn’t considered to be
favorable for the ADAPT program.

The committee looked at the other two buildings and decided
Bishop was the best fit for the program and was an environment
where the ADAPT students will be happy and thrive.
