I would like to make you aware of the Title I services we have
at Cresson Elementary. Title I is a federal program that targets
students who need help with reading and/or math. Cresson is a
Schoolwide Title I school, which means all students are eligible
for Title I services and all staff members are Title I teachers.
This means that Title I students are not singled out or pulled out
of class for services, but they get services as a part of our
regular school day. We have “Intervention” time where students in a
particular grade are grouped together to learn specific reading and
math skills. The groups are small because we have extra staff
members working with specific grade levels during the intervention
times. We started this program last year and were very successful,
with teachers and students finding “Intervention” time very
valuable.

Other programs we offer as a part of out Title I services are
the Summer and Friday Learning Clinics. Teachers invite students
who need extra help to come to school from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. to
work on skills. We have one teacher for every six students, and a
relaxed and productive atmosphere. Students make great gains
academically but they also increase their confidence.

We are using a number of assessments and programs to address
specific skills and monitor students’ progress. The data helps us
to determine what intervention to use with which students. These
tools and strategies increase our student’s learning growth.

We would like to show you the programs and assessments we use
for our Title I program. Please join us for a parents’ meeting on
Oct. 14 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. to learn more about our programs and
share your ideas and suggestions. There are a number of ways the
school and families can work as a team to help students, and we are
excited to work with you to help your child succeed. We will meet
in the media area near the second grade classrooms.

A group of local parents and community members are trying to
start a children’s museum called “Happy Hands” in Woodland Park. On
Oct. 17 and 18 they will have a yard sale at 551 Taopi Lane in
Woodland Park from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. to make money for the
museum. Also, on Oct. 20 the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant on 8th
Street in Colorado Springs will donate 10 percent of all proceeds
between 4:30 and 10 p.m. to Happy Hands Children’s Museum. If you
would like to help with this valuable project, call Nina Richards
at 719-687-4365.

We have openings for preschool students who qualify for Head
Start, Colorado Preschool Program or Tuition. We look forward to
increasing our preschool capacity, preparing our students for
success in school.

School will be in session Oct. 13, Columbus Day.
