Armstrong takes the low road
December 1982 found me in Russia visiting relatives and, being
the Cold War, communications back home did not exist. Yet, on New
Year’s Eve, the American Consulate located me and said Sen. Bill
Armstrong wanted to inform me of my father’s sudden death.
Already a fan of the senator before the call, I was a bigger one
after. I’m still one today. It’s why I wanted to support his son
Wil for Tom Tancredo’s vacant seat in the 6th Congressional
District.
But I won’t. Any candidate that takes the low road should lose.
The Armstrong campaign is the only one in the race to go negative,
and it’s running a smear campaign against Mike Coffman. It falsely
presents Wil as a local “businessman” who is really a Colorado
political insider who ran John Andrew’s re-election campaign and is
backed by the old-guard GOP, who owe his father. And like Polis and
Fitz-Gerald in the 2nd District, the Armstrong campaign uses a
“527” type committee to handle its smears.
Again, in this race, only the Armstrong campaign has sunk so
low. Bravo to Messrs. Ward, Coffman and Harvey.
Sen. Armstrong was frank, open and classy — aspects as rare in
politics today as then. Not so with Wil’s campaign. Voters in the
6th Congressional District are not stupid. Let’s stop the Armstrong
smear campaign. Let Polis and Fitz-Gerald use one on their voters.
We deserve better.
