Discuss a book.

And do it all at the local Pikes Peak Library District
branches.

Anyone looking for an engaging way to spend an afternoon or
evening can look to the library to fulfill the entertainment need
for people of all ages.

Head on over to the Monument Library and pop into the Socrates
Café to challenge the mind with a discussion group that generally
draws around 20 participants wishing to ponder timeless
philosophical questions.

“We do not discuss specific books, but concentrate on a topic.
People are free to read up from any sources they can find or to
come ‘as is,’” said Hans Post Uiterweer, moderator of the group
that meets from 1-3 p.m. Tuesdays.

“Discussions take place in a circle, with a moderator. Everyone
gets a chance to speak, but just listening in is perfectly fine. We
usually have between 20 and 25 participants. We try to look at a
topic from various angles, and every opinion counts. You never know
what you can learn from someone who thinks differently than you do.
All participants need to bring is an open mind.”

Topics include philosophy, religion, spirituality and the common
threads among humanity.

Grab a frosty root beer and let that electronic ball tear up the
lanes at the Briargate Library’s 50 and older Nintendo Wii bowling.
Every other Thursday, participants can use the motion detection
gaming system to test their skills without the funky odor intrinsic
to rental shoes. Beginners don’t fret — there is someone on hand to
educate newcomers on the ways of the Wii.

Teens sometimes cringe at the thought of spending a summer
moment in the library, but the Briargate Library offers Laptop
Thursdays for teens that goes from 4-6 p.m.

The library’s laptops will be out to use for surfing, gaming or
anything else that can be done on a laptop with refreshments
provided. Teens are encouraged to come with friends and bring their
own laptops if they prefer.

El Paso County Master Gardeners will be on hand from 2:30-8:30
p.m. at the Monument Library on Wednesdays.

“They will answer questions about anything we wonder about
growing things in this area,” said Monument Library lead branch
assistant Becky Campbell.

For the kids, there are also reasons to head out to the
library.

Snuggle Up Story Time at the Monument Library happens every
Thursday night from 7-7:30 p.m., the event includes storytelling
from picture books and interactive activities with puppets and
games.

Other events at the libraries include book discussion groups,
reading support programs and numerous other special events that
will be happening throughout the summer.
