Spring around the corner

Most high school spring sports will begin the regular season on Thursday, March 6.

CCU must settle for RMAC co-champs

A three-game losing streak at the end of the regular season forced Colorado Christian University’s men’s basketball team to share the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s East Division title with the University of Nebraska-Kearney (15-12, 13-6 in RMAC). The Cougars (16-11, 13-6) dropped their final regular season game, 77-74, to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Feb. 23. Senior Brian Stamer, five-time RMAC Player of the Week this season, scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss to the Orediggers.

Despite the road bumps at the end of conference play, CCU is seeded third for the RMAC Shootout. The Cougars face conference rival Metro State College (19-11, 12-7) in the first round of the tournament at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, at CCU in Lakewood.

Cougars draw Fort Lewis in first round of RMAC

Colorado Christian’s women’s basketball team stumbled down the home stretch of the regular season, losing four straight games. However, the Cougars (13-17, 9-10 in RMAC) edged their way into the final spot for the RMAC Shootout. CCU faces top-seeded Fort Lewis College (25-2, 18-1) at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in Durango. It’s the first appearance in the conference postseason tournament in seven years for the Cougars.
