Monument business owners will have until the second board of
trustees meeting in February to comment on a new sign
code.
The comment period is meant to answer questions business owners
have about the code.
With more descriptive language than the old one, the new code
will allow more types of signs, said Monument Director of
Development Services Tom Kassawara. New sign types allowed include
canopy, sandwich and projection signs in the downtown
corridor.
The sign code was reviewed at the request of the board of
trustees, Kassawara said. For the review, the town contacted four
businesses from the downtown corridor and four from the Colo. 105
businesses.
Together with the business owners, the town worked on a code
with the intention of improving the look of signs in Monument while
meeting the needs of local businesses, he said.
Several business owners showed up at the board of trustees
meeting Dec. 3 upset because they had not heard from the town about
the sign code changes.
Steve Marks, owner of a business park south of Peak View
Boulevard and west of Faulkner Street, said he was not made aware
of the proposed changes until Dec. 1 and said his approximately 40
tenants also did not know the town was proposing to change its sign
code.
Kassawara said the number of business owners involved in the
code review was kept to a minimum to be able to meet with each of
them. He said the department tried to get a representative sampling
of business owners from the Colo. 105 corridor and the downtown
area.
The department could not invite someone from all 415 businesses
in town, Kassawara said.
The revisions to the code are only for new businesses, with the
exception of sign types that are removable such as banner signs,
said Monument Town Manager Cathy Green.
Existing signs are all right if they formerly met code or if
they meet the new regulations.
Business owners who want a copy of the sign code can call town
hall at 719-884-8017 or pick up a copy at 166 Second St., trustee
Tommie Plank said.
