Douglas County football began its postseason run for another
Class 5A state championship Friday. The No. 5 seeded Huskies (9-1
overall) posted a 49-14 win over visiting No. 28 Fruita Monument
(3-6) at Douglas County Stadium in Castle Rock.

Junior running back Ryan Misare was in top form with four
touchdown runs against the Wildcats. His longest was in the first
15 seconds of the game when he scampered 80 yards to start the
rout. Misare finished the game with 14 carries for 217
yards.

Fellow back Jose Astorga, a sophomore, also pounded a touchdown
onto the scoreboard with a 5-yard run in the fourth. Astorga
finished with 112 yards rushing.

Joe Barlow, a senior defensive back, booked an interception,
which he ran six yards for a touchdown of his own in the third
quarter.

After a 15-yard TD run from Cory Roberts in the fourth quarter,
Fruita Monument was able to get on the scoreboard again before the
end of regulation after Alex Rodriguez recovered a fumble and ran
it back 3 yards for a touchdown.

The Huskies quickly deflated the Wildcats less than 20 seconds
later when senior Lyle Brown ran the ensuing kickoff back 100 yards
for County’s final touchdown.

Kicker Andy Giepel had an exceptional game for DC with a 35-yard
field goal in the third quarter and after going 7-7 on extra-point
attempts.

Senior quarterback Keiffer Garton threw for 205 yards on 11-19
attempts and two interceptions. Cameron White, a senior tight end,
led the team in receiving yards with 74.

After facing the Wildcats, senior Ian Reither leads the Huskies
defense in unassisted tackles for the season with 22. Linebacker
Luke Deihl, also a senior, booked 44 assisted tackles this year so
far. Senior Marcus Richtel leads the team in sacks with seven, five
unassisted. Junior back Tyler Jackson has 14 broken up passes to
his credit.

With the win, the defending 5A champion Huskies advance to the
second round of the state bracket. They face No. 21 seed Arapahoe
(11-7) at 7 p.m. Friday at Littleton Public Schools
Stadium.
