They are towering over the net, riding a three-game winning
streak. All three victories have been sweeps.
Pioneer volleyball is poised to take second place in the 2A
South Central conference. At 10-5 (3-2) on the season, a win
against visiting Cotopaxi on Oct. 12 will secure the runner-up
finish.
Cripple Creek/Victor won 3-0 in a league game at South Park on
Oct. 5. The Pioneers returned home and beat Delores Huerta 3-0 on
Oct. 7.
South Park improved on the court since CC/V’s dominant win on
Sept. 14.
“They were really scrappy on defense,” coach Amy Christison
said. “We kept setting the ball up and hitting hard, but they were
able to pick up a lot of our hits.”
Although the Pioneers swept the match, South Park kept the sets
close. CC/V won 25-18, 27-25 and 27-25.
“The girls served well and kept their composure in three tight
games,” Christison said. “We came from behind in the second and
third games to win the match.”
Senior middle blocker Emily Wasson led the Pioneers with four
kills and two blocks in the win. Seniors Sam Korich and Katie
Clarke and sophomore Morgon Chapman contributed three kills
each.
Junior Elle Clarke paced the team with 10 digs. Katie Clarke
stung South Park with four aces.
CC/V’s win over Delores Huerta was less competitive. The
Pioneers won 25-8, 25-17 and 25-17.
“We were able to set up some of our offensive plays we haven’t
gotten to run in a while,” Christison said of the 3-0 victory. “I
know they had a lot of girls out for one reason or another, so I
don’t know if that was their whole team.”
Chapman, Korich and Wasson led their team’s offensive attack
with two kills each. Grenfell and junior Jordan Schleicher both
served five aces. Katie Clarke passed out five assists to attacking
teammates.
After hosting Cotopaxi in the league game on Oct. 12, CC/V
travels to Hilltop Baptist on Oct. 13. The Pioneers beat Cotopaxi
3-1 on the road earlier this season.
