The man accused of being the “I’ll be back” bandit will have a preliminary hearing on March 17.

Julio Ontiveros-Perez, 26, was arrested Feb. 16 in connection to robberies around the metro area and is being held at the Jefferson County Jail, according to Arvada police.

The Arvada resident allegedly has confessed to multiple robberies and said he took the money to gamble in Central City, according to an arrest affidavit.

He is in custody on a $15,000 bond and charged with 10 felonies, said Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s office.

The charges consist of four counts of second-degree kidnapping, five counts of aggravated robbery menacing using a deadly weapon and one count of attempted aggravated robbery, she said.

The bandit targeted check cashing stores in Arvada, Lakewood, Denver and Westminster and committed nearly 20 robberies in the metro Denver area since summer 2005.

Each time, the suspect entered the business and visited with the clerk, then left and returned minutes or days later, demanding cash and flashing a handgun.

Arvada police arrested Ontiveros-Perez after a tip from a State Farm insurance office employee.

According to the affidavit, Ontiveros-Perez told police he had intended to rob the State Farm office on the day he was arrested at the business.

He confessed to five other robberies in Arvada and also to specific robberies at check cashing businesses, according to the affidavit.

Also, the man said he would often gamble in the Central City area with the monies he got from the robberies and that items worn and used during previous robberies were at his apartment.

The hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. in Division A at 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden.
