Girls in physical education teacher Brooke Hargis’ class at Pine
Creek High School use weights at the same time as they exercise on
fitness balls each week. Girls seem to like weight training this
way, she said. The balls also give a workout to the abdomen and
torso, what Hargis calls “core” training. Sometimes they work out
to a video, other times, like this photo, it is part of a stations
workout. Another advantage to the technique is the girls can afford
to buy a ball for home at a cost of $20 or $30 to continue their
fitness inexpensively, Hargis said. The girls were weight training
with boys until last year, but this is more popular, although there
is still a co-ed advanced weight training class.
