Douglas County put a hurting on Hinkley Friday, plucking the
Thunderbirdsw 49-13 at Douglas County Schools Stadium in Castle
Rock.
The Thunderbirds (2-5 overall, 0-3 Continental League-National)
were quickly introduced to the tough County offense after the
Huskies (6-1, 3-0) scored 35 points in the first quarter and 14 in
the second.
County quarterback Keiffer Garton found receiver Steve Fendry
for two touchdowns in the opening quarter. The first was for
12-yards, two minutes into the game, while the second went for
eight yards with 38 seconds remaining.
Running back Andy Muns was key for the Huskies’ once again. Muns
and the County O-line hit pay dirt twice in the first quarter, both
one-yard scoring runs. With 3:30 left in the first, Kaither Holiway
returned a 31-yard punt from Rajan Belt to get in the end zone
again for the Huskies.
County climbed on Muns’ back again in the second quarter for two
touchdowns, one for 29 yards and another for four, Muns’ fourth TD
of the game came with just over a minute left in the half and the
Huskies led 49-0 at halftime. County kicker Cory Reynolds scored a
touchdown the hard way, going 7-7 on extra-point
attempts.
With the rout on, Hinkley averted the shutout in the last five
minutes of the game when quarterback Tyrell Kinard ran a fumble
recovery five yards to finally put the Thunderbirds on the
scoreboard. Kicker Freddie Madeiza’s point-after-TD attempt was
good.
Later, Kinard threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Berry,
but Belt’s PAT kick went wide, leaving the score at
49-13.
Muns continues to cover more ground than a butcher shop,
finishing the game with 214 rushing yards on 20 carries. He has
1,513 yards on the season with 19 touchdowns. Logan Klossner had 75
yards on six runs and Chris Legace added 57 rushing
yards.
Fendry, having scored twice, had 20 yards receiving, while
Holiway had 32. Garton didn’t need to air it out, but completed his
only two passes for 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
With the win, the Huskies remain undefeated on top of the
Continental League-National Conference thanks to Chaparral, which
beat Arapahoe last week 31-26 to hand the Warriors their only
league loss. County will hit the road to face Arapahoe (6-1, 3-1)
at 2 p.m. Saturday with a chance to win the league title outright
and earn a higher seed in the Class 5A football playoffs.
