Mesa Drive postponed

The Golden City Council looked favorably on postponing discussions about a controversial extension to Mesa Drive to 2007 during a study session Thursday, Aug. 4. The extension would extend the north Golden street to connect state Highway 93 to Ford Street. While some residents thought the new road would give people greater access to the highway and the downtown area, still more opposed the road saying it would increase traffic on Ford Street and disrupt a riparian corridor. Councilman Bob Nelson was in favor of dealing with the issue sooner, but other councilors favored saving it for 2007.

Road closed for Mines

Maple Street between 16th and 17th streets will be permanently closed and vacated Aug. 15. The area will become additional campus space for the Colorado School of Mines and is part of the school’s master plan to make the campus more pedestrian friendly and safer.

Golden Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society will host Golden’s Relay For Life starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the North Area Athletic Complex at state Highway 93 and 64th Avenue, and continuing at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14.

Boasting food and entertainment, the event is the largest non-profit fund-raiser in the world with more than 4,000 relays held around the world.

“It’s a great way to bring the community together for a really great cause,” said Lynda Solomon of ACS. “It funds research and advocacy, education, awareness and services to communities. It allows us to have support groups, supply wigs and hats, prosthesis, and kids camp for siblings of cancer patients… It’s a really moving, fun event.”
