This Saturday is the day set aside this year for “Make A
Difference Day.”
Numerous organizations throughout the country will
take time this weekend to make a difference in any number of
ways.
Making a difference can be as simple as pulling weeds to helping
a senior with work around the
home to collecting food for area food banks. The opportunities
are endless.
In an effort to make a difference in the Acres Green community,
our senior gardener, Cecil, has asked for help cleaning up the two
community gardens.
The first is at Apollo Court and Acres Green Drive. The second
is the garden at the Willow Creek rest area just north of Maximus
Drive on the Willow Creek Trail. Both gardens have been looking
terrific, but need to be cleaned up before winter.
Weeding, trimming the iris and general cleaning up of brush are
the primary needs in these gardens. Anyone who can take the time to
help in this effort is asked to come to either garden at 9 a.m.
this Saturday.
Trash bags will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring their
own pruning shears for the iris.
Cecil has done such a great job with these gardens over the
years, I’m sure he would consider it a great thank you to see
people come out and clean up the gardens in appreciation of all his
efforts. I hope many of you can take the time to help.
Next Thursday, Oct. 28, is the date for the quarterly Acres
Green/Lone Tree Town meeting at the Douglas County Park Meadows
Center.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is usually over by 8:30.
County commissioners and various other county officials hold
quarterly meetings in various communities in the county throughout
the year.
These meetings present a unique opportunity for residents to
meet local officials and hear directly what is going on in the
county.
In recent meetings, county officials have taken this opportunity
to announce several planned improvements. This is also a great time
for residents to address issues of concern directly to their county
officials.
This is the latest garden remodel update. If all goes according
to plan we should have sod in our back yard by the time you read
this.
I’m still awaiting bulbs for the front garden in the hope they
get here before the first snowfall.
Having said that, I have been able to get bulbs in the ground
later than this if the ground is workable, but it is always nice to
be able to put the gardens to bed and focus attention on other
things.
Putting up a new fence and relaying the flagstone walkway are
next on the agenda.
