D’Evelyn’s football team had averaged 41.6 points per game going into its Class 3A quarterfinal game Nov. 15 in Steamboat Springs.

That average took a severe drop after the 3A Metro League champions were dumped by the Steamboat Springs Sailors 22-0 on the Western Slope. It was the first time all season that D’Evelyn had been shut out.

The No. 2 seed out of the Western Slope League used a blitzing defense to disrupt the Jaguars’ potent offense that had scored at least 35 points in each of its previous eight games. The Sailors (11-1 record) were in the face of D’Evelyn senior quarterback Josh Schneider the entire game.

Schneider was held to negative yardage on the ground and wasn’t too effective through the air. The senior was 7-of-19 passing for 104 yards. D’Evelyn’s running back trio of sophomore Scott MacDonald and seniors Dana Head and Matt Supan were held in check.

MacDonald had 14 carries for 53 yards to lead the Jaguars. Head and Supan combined for 22 yards on eight attempts.

Steamboat Springs had much more success on offense on its home field. Sailors’ quarterback David May was 15-for-27 passing for 285 yards, including a touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory. The win moves Steamboat Springs into the 3A semifinals for which it will travel to Florence.

D’Evelyn ends its most successful season in school history with an 11-1 record.
