The Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad will put its
motto, “We can move your world,” into play Sept. 24 when it moves
two boxes of books from the former Philip S. Miller Library to the
new site in downtown Castle Rock.
The half-mile move from 961 S. Plum Creek Blvd. to 100 S. Wilcox
St. will begin at 1 p.m., said Lena Kent, director of public
affairs for the railroad.
The move is symbolic because trains have been part of Castle
Rock’s existence since the beginning, said Johanna Harden,
archivist for Douglas County Libraries. Including them in the move
seemed like a natural progress.
The move will be completed by law enforcement officers who will
be posted on the train for the “Officer on the Train” program,
which uses officers to monitor drivers’ behavior at railroad
crossings.
Castle Rock police officers and Douglas County sheriff’s
deputies on the train will radio officers on the ground if they see
a driver disobeying traffic laws at railroad crossings, Kent
said.
“It’s up to law enforcement to decide whether offenders will be
warned or given tickets,” Kent said.
The grand opening for the new library will be Sept.
27.
The all-day celebration, themed “A Moving History. A Grand
Opening,” will feature library tours, an area business expo, an
evening community dance, a children’s parade and indoor and outdoor
live music during the day.
