Drunk and fast
West 54th Avenue and Marshall Street, July 18, 11:05 p.m.
A 42-year-old male driver first caught the attention of the police when he sped past a parked patrol car doing 55 mph southbound on Marshall Street at West 54th Avenue. The officer, pacing the van at 60 mph in a 35-mph zone, caught up with the driver on westbound West 52nd Avenue just before Vance Street. The driver blew through the stoplight at Vance but was forced to a stop by traffic that was stopped at a red light at the Wadsworth Boulevard intersection. It took several requests by the officer before the driver finally shut off his engine. As the driver, who smelled of alcohol, bailed out of the van, he found he could not stand without the aid of the officer. He admitted that he should not be driving given the amount he had to drink. After failing roadside sobriety tests, the man was ticketed for DUI and taken to detox.
What do I have to do …
8155 Sheridan Blvd., July 19, 7:30 p.m.
Officers responded to a Fazoli’s restaurant on a robbery call. An employee watched a white Honda Accord pull up to the front door of the restaurant. The driver, a Hispanic man in his mid 20s, entered the store and walked up to the counter. The impatient man asked another employee, “What do I have to do to get service?” After paying cash for the bottle of water he ordered, the man decided to help himself to the cash drawer when the employee opened the register. The cashier stepped out of the way while the man took the money. He left the store and drove off. The employee behind the register told police the man was 6 feet or taller, about 190 pounds, had tattoos on both arms and was wearing what she called a black “wife beater” tank top. Police searched the area, but the suspect was not found.
You did not see me
6900 block of Teller Court, July 20, 8:32 p.m.
At least two people called police to report a maroon Chevy truck driving at a high rate of speed up and down the 7000 block of Teller Court. One witness estimated the speed of the truck to be 90 mph in the residential area. A witness also said the driver nearly hit a parked car while making a turn. Police visited the home where neighbors said the truck parked. The girl who answered the door told police the truck belonged to her brother, and that he just returned home. When her brother, 37, came out to talk with police, officers noticed the man smelled o alcohol and had glassy, bloodshot, watery eyes. His shorts also were unzipped. He admitted drinking four beers in the four hours before he returned home. But he denied speeding. He said he was driving no faster than 35 mph, and his tires squealed only because he made a turn. He refused to submit to roadside sobriety tests. As he was being taken into custody for investigation of DUI, he advised police that they could not arrest him because they did not see him speed. Then he informed officers that he was not driving the truck. While reviewing his options at the police station, his mood changed from jovial to obnoxious. He eventually agreed to roadside sobriety tests, which he failed. He then refused to take any type of chemical test. He was ticketed for DUI and careless driving.
