May 18-24 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. The U.S. Postal Service and the Humane Society teamed up to promote the event, which I truly support. I haven’t been bitten in a long time but that’s because I take extraordinary measures to avoid the barking beasts. I’m one of those annoying people who gets hives and begins sneezing if a dog, cat, horse, cute bunny or gnat come near me. I’m one of those who the dogs “sense” as being scared and ready to run for my life.
Despite the claims of the newspapers’ editorial staff, I’m not an animal hater. I just don’t like to be around animals for the reasons mentioned above.
Enough about me, the U.S. Humane Society reports the top three victims of dog bites are children, the elderly and letter carriers. Dog-bite victims account for up to 5 percent of emergency room visits.
And this one, which my dad (did I mention he was a former mail carrier?) will love: “Many of the letter-carrier dog bites nationwide came from dogs whose owners said would not bite,” according to the Humane Society.
Jeffco showed its dominance when it brought home two state baseball championship trophies this past weekend.
Pomona rocked Regis 2-1 in 5A action, powered by the pitching of Jon Klausing.
In Golden, the Demons burned up Loveland’s Mountain View in a 6-3 win in 4A ball. Cousins Mark Melancon and Luke Roberts provided the one-two pitching punch for the Demons.
The Green Mountain girls came within inches of winning the state soccer title in 5A on Tuesday. They were defeated by the Dakota Ridge Eagles 1-0. Not only is Dakota Ridge a Jeffco school, but Green Mountain had to get past Wheat Ridge to get into the title game.
Jeffco rocks.
