Butterfly gardening programs planned

Before planting a garden this spring, be sure to plan for summer
magic by choosing the plants that are friendly to
butterflies.

Michael Weissman, co-founder of the Butterfly Pavilion in
Westminster, will share the beauty of butterflies at Douglas Public
Library District libraries this spring.

In a slide show that introduces the varieties of Colorado
butterflies, Weissman will guide beginning and expert gardeners to
the plants that butterflies love.

Weissman received a doctorate’s degree in entomology from
Colorado State University and continues to serve there as an
affiliate faculty member. He has written several scientific and
popular publications on insects.

One major benefit to planting flowers and shrubs for butterflies
is “you don’t have to mow anymore,” Weissman said.

Butterfly gardening programs will be at the following
libraries:

q 1 p.m., April 7, Lone Tree Library;

q 1p.m., May 5, Highlands Ranch Library;

q 1 p.m., May 12, Parker Library

q 6:30 p.m., May 31, Philip S. Miller Library in Castle
Rock.

Puppet show

features bugs

Children still can sign up for the Douglas Public Library
District’s spring reading program, “Centipede, Millipede – Let’s
Read!” until Friday.

Once registered, participants read 15 books and write the titles
on their Centipede, Millipede Let’s Read! log (pre-readers can
listen to books or have adults read aloud to them).

Participants then bring the completed reading log back to their
local library and readers will be rewarded with a special
certificate, a “bug box” and a chance to win a real butterfly
nursery.

To celebrate books and bugs, the library district will feature
caterpillars, ladybugs, bees and butterflies as the stars of the
annual spring puppet show, Bugs Galore! The library’s story time
puppeteers will entertain young audiences with a dramatic
presentation of Eric Carle’s “The Grouchy Ladybug,” along with many
other silly skits and songs about bugs. Bugs Galore will be
crawling these local libraries:

q 7 p.m., Monday, Highlands Ranch Library;

q 7 p.m., April 5, Parker Library;

q 6:30 p.m., April 9, Lone Tree Library;
