Thursday
Thomas Jefferson at Highlands Ranch football
The Falcons will kick off the season with the first game in the
county this year. The game also will be the first at the new Shea
Stadium.
Shea Stadium will be home to Highlands Ranch, ThunderRidge and
Chaparral high schools. The Falcons will take the field against
Thomas Jefferson at 7 p.m.
The Spartans are the first of five 1999 playoff teams the Falcons
will face this year. But with 14 starters back from last year, the
Falcons should be able to hold their own.
Northglenn at Ponderosa gymnastics
This is the first meet in a busy season for the Mustangs, and it is
against one of the better teams in the state.
Friday
Air Academy at ThunderRidge football
A day after the grand opening of Shea Stadium, the Grizzlies will
have their chance to show what they can do on the field when they
host Air Academy.
Last year, ThunderRidge surprised the state by ripping through the
regular season with a perfect 10-0 record. The team has lost many
players since then and will have a new coach, but the Grizzlies are
eager to show they are for real.
Arapahoe Cross Country Invitational
The 40-team meet kicks off the cross country season and will give
runners an idea of where they are and where they will need to be by
the end of the season.
Saturday
Garden City, Kan.,
at Ponderosa football
The first time the Mustangs met up with Garden City, they were able
to spoil the long drive to Colorado made by the Garden City fans.
Last year the Mustangs went to Garden City and won that game.
This year, Garden City will be looking for revenge, but it won’t be
easy to get against Ponderosa.
Dakota Ridge at Douglas County football
The Huskies went through some growing pains last year. With a new
head coach and a young squad, 1999 was a year the Huskies would
like to forget. But this year the team has grown used to Jeff
Ketron’s system and are ready to prove themselves on the field.
Pueblo Centennial at Chaparral football
It has been a long growing process for the Wolverienes but this
year Chaparral will put some seniors on the field for the first
time.
Running back Hardy Beitz returns to the backfield in the robust
offense and the Wolverienes are ready to make some noise.
Don McCall Softball Invitational
This is one of the best tournaments of the year and one in which
teams can find out where they are at right off the bat.
Traditional powers Ponderosa and Douglas County will be in the
field as will the up-and-coming Highlands Ranch Falcons.
It is one of the best tournaments of the year for softball players
and fans.
