To the editor:

Dear Mr. Canya,

I normally don’t read your column, but I managed to get through
your diatribe in the Aug. 9 issue of the News-Press. I really am
surprised that the paper would print a personal attack on the Lewis
family — well, actually it was Debbie and Mark, you didn’t attack
their kids. I did notice the “cute” way you misspelled their names.
At first I thought it was just sloppy writing, which I expect from
you. Then I realized that it was meant to be humor.

Political figures are fair game, and there is quite a bit of leeway
in laws regarding slander in writing about them. Mark and Debbie
Lewis have faults, and are maybe a little flamboyant, but in this
era of rubber-stamp politicians, they are refreshing.

Mark tried to buck the system in Douglas County in running for
commissioner; maybe the system needs a shake-up. Both Mark and
Debbie have been active members of the community, which is more
than I can say for Mr. Cannula. The Parker community needs more
activist people, but they will have to put up with the objects
thrown by you and the other sty dwellers.
